Survey responses! Yay!

I posted a survey on the "I LISTEN TO WIZARD ROCK!" Facebook group a while back, and I recently received three responses that I'd like to post here.

Name: While it was in her Facebook post, she didn't post it directly in her survey response, so I'll call her "Ann" (not her real name) to be on the safe side.

Age (only if you want to provide it; you can also give me an estimate like “20s” or “teenager” if you’d like): 15

1. When and how did you become interested in Wizard Rock?
when i was like 12 ish... my harry potter obsessed friend invited me to yule ball 06.. i went and loved it. been obsessed ever since.

2. What about Wizard Rock appeals to you?
ive loved hp since 2nd grade... and i love music. wrock is the two combined. yay!

4. Do you interact with other Wizard Rock fans? If so, where do you usually interact with them?
not to often... i guess only on myspace and facebook sometimes.

5. How do you learn about Wizard Rock bands and artists?
through myspace.

6. How frequently do you go to Wizard Rock-related websites? Which websites do you typically go to?
umm i listen to wrock on myspace pretty often..

7. Do you think that there is a Wizard Rock community? If so, how would you describe this community, and would you consider yourself to be a member of it?
uhh yeah i guess there is one.. and imjust a fan, so maybe a small part of the community.

8. Do you participate in or enjoy any other aspects of Harry Potter fan culture like fanfiction, fanart, or roleplaying?

Name: Lauren.

Age (only if you want to provide it; you can also give me an estimate like “20s” or “teenager” if you’d like): 18.

1. When and how did you become interested in Wizard Rock?
I heard some Harry and the Potters on Myspace and got a bit interested for a while, but I let real life take over again (shameful, I know!!) and then I rediscovered it in late August this year, and I have been totally obsessed ever since.

2. What about Wizard Rock appeals to you?
Well I'm a hugely obsessive Harry Potter fan, and I love music. There isn't anything that better combines those two than wrock!

3. Have you been to any Wizard Rock concerts? If so, how many?
I went to Potter Rocks 07 in Birmingham. That was the first one, because there aren't many in the UK in general, and there aren't ANY in Scotland. But I loved it, and I'm totally up for any more.

4. Do you interact with other Wizard Rock fans? If so, where do you usually interact with them?
Myspace, Skype (The Great Skype Wrockfest!), Facebook (as of last night XD).

5. How do you learn about Wizard Rock bands and artists?
From Wizrocklopedia sometimes, from other fans mostly. Oh, and Myspace.

6. How frequently do you go to Wizard Rock-related websites? Which websites do you typically go to?
Wizrocklopedia, sometimes. Like maybe once a week on average or something. Realwizardrock.com...I love that site. About the same. Oh, and I've been listening to some PFW radio on Live365. Almost every day in fact. I love that I can recognise the artists even if I don't know the songs lol. Progress!

7. Do you think that there is a Wizard Rock community? If so, how would you describe this community, and would you consider yourself to be a member of it?
Oh, there totally is. But I'm still in the UK section of it. It's like, there is the whole community and those who are in all of it (like the famous american wrockers, HatP, DatM, The Moaning Myrtles etc.) and then there is the UK one, which kind of...well for me, anyway...is everyone just together, fans and artists. It's awesomesauce. I consider myself a part of it, yes. I hope other people don't go "No you're not!" now :P

8. Do you participate in or enjoy any other aspects of Harry Potter fan culture like fanfiction, fanart, or roleplaying?
I've been reading and writing fanfiction for nearly five years now. But that's it.

9. Are you a Wizard Rock musician or have you ever considered becoming one? If so, why?
I have written a lot of songs, but only lyrics not music...I kind of suck at music. So I'm working on that at the moment :) Right now I'm mostly being just a fan. That's a lot of fun :)

10. How much of a Wizard Rock fan would you consider yourself to be?
Pretty big. I got Jingle Spells in mid November and have been listening to it ever since, even though Christmas is still a month away. And I was considering flying over to the states for Wrockstock, but since it seems all my buddies are going to Terminus instead, that might change...

Name (this can be a pseudonym if you’d prefer): Laura

Age (only if you want to provide it; you can also give me an estimate like “20s” or “teenager” if you’d like): 17

1. When and how did you become interested in Wizard Rock?
When i first met my friend Tina (we became friends because we both love HP) she told me about a band she'd heard called Harry and the Potters. I heard one song and i became hooked, i then started looking around and finding new bands.

2. What about Wizard Rock appeals to you?
Well firstly it's a combination of Harry Potter and music, which is amazing, and also it's a great community of people, i've never had more fun then when i was at a wrock concert.

3. Have you been to any Wizard Rock concerts? If so, how many?
As i live in Canada, i don't get to go to too many, only when they come here, or if they're Canadian bands, but ive seen harry and the potters 3 times, and draco and the malfoys twice and i saw the remus lupins and the whomping willows when i was at Prophecy in the summer, that was a really good concert.

4. Do you interact with other Wizard Rock fans? If so, where do you usually interact with them?
Usually at concerts, and sometimes online.

5. How do you learn about Wizard Rock bands and artists?
Myspace.

6. How frequently do you go to Wizard Rock-related websites? Which websites do you typically go to?
Well i got to wizardrock.org a lot, they have a lot of great updates and stuff, and then i go on myspace to see bulletins that bands post.

7. Do you think that there is a Wizard Rock community? If so, how would you describe this community, and would you consider yourself to be a member of it?
There is definatly a community. I think it's one of the best parts, all the wizard rock bands and the fans are always interacting and partying together and i think that it's really great. It's an incredibly friendly community and i think that we all just instantly relate to one another because we all love harry potter and we all love music.

8. Do you participate in or enjoy any other aspects of Harry Potter fan culture like fanfiction, fanart, or roleplaying?
I've been reading fanfiction for a long time, but i've never written any as i don't think i have that kind of talent, i also go to HP conferences, which is a great way to be part of the HP fandom.

9. Are you a Wizard Rock musician or have you ever considered becoming one? If so, why?
Nope. I can't play any instruments.

10. How much of a Wizard Rock fan would you consider yourself to be?
A very big one. I like all wizard rock bands, simply because they're wizard rock bands.

Some early thoughts: They're all women in their mid-teens, which seems to apply to a large sector of the Wrock fanbase. They all agree that there's a Wrock community, even if they have different standards for membership and ideas of what membership means. They consider themselves to be big fans of Harry Potter in general, not just Wrock. While they have all been to Wrock concerts, Myspace and other Wrock websites have a huge influence on the appreciation of Wrock and participation in the Wrock scene. I've also posted this on the HP Alliance forums, so hopefully I'll get even more great responses!

You should post this on myspace. That's really the go-to place for bands these days. (See the responses to number six.)

I was planning on doing that, but it turns out that you have to be a Myspace member for a week to post a topic in the forums, and seeing as I just joined Myspace and my final blog posting for this class is coincidentally due in about a week I wouldn't have a chance to really process the responses before the due date...I know, excuses excuses.

1. When and how did you become interested in Wizard Rock?
My friend had a song by Harry and the Potters on her Myspace because she though it was funny people would ever make a song about Harry Potter. I decided to check it out and fell in love with the whole wrock scene.

2. What about Wizard Rock appeals to you?
I've always loved reading and Harry Potter is, in my opinion, one of the best series out there. I also love music, so putting the two together is like a dream come true. Wrockers also send out some good messages, like reading is cool and to love one another, etc. I just really agree with that way of thinking.

3. Have you been to any Wizard Rock concerts? If so, how many?
I wish, as I don't have my own form of transportation yet, it's kind of hard to get places. My mom thinks I'm a goofball for listening to it and she would never take me to a show. As for going with friends, I'm lucky there are so many other fun qualities I have because they would disown me if I ever asked them to go to a concert with me.

4. Do you interact with other Wizard Rock fans? If so, where do you usually interact with them?
I only ever get the chance to interact with people online. I've met some pretty cool people that way.

5. How do you learn about Wizard Rock bands and artists?
I learn about new bands online, mostly through Myspace and the Wizrocklopedia.

6. How frequently do you go to Wizard Rock-related websites? Which websites do you typically go to?
Every single time I get on the computer, so mostly everyday. I go to Myspace, or Wizrocklopedia.

7. Do you think that there is a Wizard Rock community? If so, how would you describe this community, and would you consider yourself to be a member of it?
There is definitely a Wrock community and I'd definitely consider myself part of it. The community is really anyone that's interested in Wrock at any level.

8. Do you participate in or enjoy any other aspects of Harry Potter fan culture like fanfiction, fanart, or roleplaying?
I have though of doing fanfiction, but other than that, no.

9. Are you a Wizard Rock musician or have you ever considered becoming one? If so, why?
I wouldn't consider myself a Wrock musician yet. I have no name for myself and am still trying to learn a few instruments essential to a good band. I've already writen a couple songs and as soon as I get a decent recording system, I'll definitely post them.

10. How much of a Wizard Rock fan would you consider yourself to be?
I'm a crazy, intense, super fangirl, for almost all the bands.

1. When and how did you become interested in Wizard Rock?
I became interested in Wizard Rock about two years ago at the Lumos 2006 conference. I attended my first concert there (Harry and the Potters and Draco and the Malfoys…and The Remus Lupins opened for the podcast I work for) and it was love at first note.
2. What about Wizard Rock appeals to you?
I think it’s mostly the personal level in which the bands interact with the fans. I’ve always loved going to concerts, and it’s always a major bummer when you wait in line for an hour to meet the band after the show and their total jerks. But in the wrock fandom, I’ve never had that experience. The bands are always cheerful and fun, no matter how hard they just wrocked on stage. Plus, the DIY ethics the support, and the way they use their “fame” to promote causes (like Darfur…and the HP Alliance has majorly benefited from Wizard Rock) is really commendable.
3. Have you been to any Wizard Rock concerts? If so, how many?
Yes. I attended one at Lumos, one at Prophecy, and I’ve hosted two Whomping Willows concerts at my school.
4. Do you interact with other Wizard Rock fans? If so, where do you usually interact with them?
Sometimes. I’ve met some really great people through wizard rock, and a handful of them have become close friends. But, before I fell into wizard rock, I already had an amazing group of “Potter-based” friends. Some of them are older and think wrock is rather funny, but the ones closer to my age swap CDs with me. We chat a lot over Skype and AIM, sometimes email, and then there’s always the concerts..
5. How do you learn about Wizard Rock bands and artists?
At first through Myspace. But now that I have an “established” Wrock taste, my friends and I normally swap bands back and forth. Cause the bands on Myspace are either REALLY good or REALLY bad…so that’s always a gamble. It’s easier to learn about them from a friend, or the Wizrocklopedia.
6. How frequently do you go to Wizard Rock-related websites? Which websites do you typically go to?
I visit The Wizrocklopedia about once a day to keep up on my favorite bands. There’s a few bands who I try to keep updated on, I check their blogs whenever they make a new post.
7. Do you think that there is a Wizard Rock community? If so, how would you describe this community, and would you consider yourself to be a member of it?
There is a Wizard Rock community, but it’s sort of an arm of the overall Harry Potter fandom. It carries on a lot of the vibes from the larger fandom: friendship and love are really important. Overall, everyone seems to really be in it for the music and the friendships, not anything else. While some of the fangirls can be pretty intense, it’s still friendlier attitude than at most concerts. At most concerts I go to, there’s always a big mosh pit, it can be kind of dangerous, and it’s a fight to get as close to the stage as possible. Wizard Rock is completely different. Everyone is pretty laid back, there’s not much pushing or shoving, they’re all just there to have a good time. And if you’re not dancing, you’re probably a parent who got dragged along. I would consider myself a member. I’m not as involved in this part of the fandom as I am in other parts, but I like to stay updated on my favorite bands and I think I have more Wrock music on my iPod right now than anything else.
8. Do you participate in or enjoy any other aspects of Harry Potter fan culture like fanfiction, fanart, or roleplaying?
Well, I work for the-leaky-cauldron.org and their podcast, PotterCast. The podcasts are a whole other crazy side to the fandom, and it has been a great experience working with PotterCast and Leaky.
9. Are you a Wizard Rock musician or have you ever considered becoming one? If so, why?
I’ve joked about it before. I like to write songs anyway, and when you have Potter on the brain, sometimes it flows out with your creative energy. But I can’t play an instrument, so at the moment, it’s not happening. Why become a Wizard Rock musician…I don’t know, isn’t it every little kid’s dream at one time or another to be a rock star? It’s just another way of expressing your love for the series and your creativity. I can’t draw, I don’t have the patience to write a fanfic, but I can write songs, so why not, you know?
10. How much of a Wizard Rock fan would you consider yourself to be?
Like I said earlier, I’m on the outskirts of the Wrock community. While I LOVE the bands and their music, I can’t drive more than a few hours for a concert, and I can’t take off school for Wrockstock or Wrock the Boat. So, I guess I’m more of a casual fan. I’ll be the first to buy a CD when I can, but I’m too busy to throw myself into this end of the fandom like I have others.

Yes for helping other people with assignments! And, err, I like doing these anywho. : D

Age: 14

1. When and how did you become interested in Wizard Rock?
Well, the first time I heard about it was when my mother suddenly was all, "Ohh, look, Deathly Hallows is coming out in the next year!" So I looked that up and somehow got to wizardrock.org. I wasn't big into HP at that point, and there wasn't that many bands either, so I was just 'eh meh'. After reading Deathly Hallows, I was like, 'YUSS WROCK!'.

2. What about Wizard Rock appeals to you?
It's magical. :] And it's so relaxed. There's barely any pressure. It's pretty cool.

3. Have you been to any Wizard Rock concerts? If so, how many?
Nuu D: I'm too poor to fly overseas, and there's not a band who plays live here...

4. Do you interact with other Wizard Rock fans? If so, where do you usually interact with them?
I don't talk to many, apart from my own friends. Occasionally I might leave a myspace comment or something, but not usually otherwise.

5. How do you learn about Wizard Rock bands and artists?
Wizrocklopedia. It's magic.

6. How frequently do you go to Wizard Rock-related websites? Which websites do you typically go to?
Wizrocklopedia, and sometimes wizardrock.org. About once a day. Sometimes more if I'm expecting something. I've taken a break lately, though, because of end-of-year stuffs.

7. Do you think that there is a Wizard Rock community? If so, how would you describe this community, and would you consider yourself to be a member of it?
I think so. But I'm not really part of it, unfortunately. There's just too much water between me and that community. :\

8. Do you participate in or enjoy any other aspects of Harry Potter fan culture like fanfiction, fanart, or roleplaying?
I draw pictures, but they're on my very unknown deviantart account. I write fanfics occasionally, and read some too, but nothing else apart from that. Oh, wait, I'm in a Quidditch team! :]

9. Are you a Wizard Rock musician or have you ever considered becoming one? If so, why?
I have considered becoming one, but I've decided to leave it until I'm better at music. I think it's a great opportunity to start bands and get to know people who love HP. If you write songs about HP with people who love HP...well, you can't really go wrong, can you?

10. How much of a Wizard Rock fan would you consider yourself to be?
I wouldn't be the most XCOREE of the lot, but I'd say I'm pretty close to that. :] And good luck on the assignment! Wheee~!

1. When and how did you become interested in Wizard Rock?
I was invited to a Harry and the Potters concert in August of last year, but I didn't get really involved until about last March or April

2. What about Wizard Rock appeals to you?
The ability for anyone to be what they want. Fangirls can be fangirls, people who've never touched an instrument can be recording artists.

3. Have you been to any Wizard Rock concerts? If so, how many?
Yes, 15+, including 4ish festivals featuring more than 3 bands

4. Do you interact with other Wizard Rock fans? If so, where do you usually interact with them?
Yes, as a fan and as a band member. Primarily, we talk on myspace, but I have had a few people add me on facebook. The best is in person at the conventions or shows.

5. How do you learn about Wizard Rock bands and artists?
wizrocklopedia.com is my home page :)

6. How frequently do you go to Wizard Rock-related websites? Which websites do you typically go to?
As I said, wizrocklopedia.com is my homepage, so i see it multiple times every day. Plus, just checking the bulletin board on myspace keeps me up to date as well.

7. Do you think that there is a Wizard Rock community? If so, how would you describe this community, and would you consider yourself to be a member of it?
There is definitely a wizard rock community, and it's very well-defined by the recent backlash against the MTV Top 10 List. In general, we (including myself) are a happy, accepting lot. We like to give anyone a chance.

8. Do you participate in or enjoy any other aspects of Harry Potter fan culture like fanfiction, fanart, or roleplaying?
Roleplaying to an extent, but I'm definitely not up there with the pros like VoldyBeth.

9. Are you a Wizard Rock musician or have you ever considered becoming one? If so, why?
I am. I do it because it's both a way to further experience and understand the books, and also a way to hone my musical skills.

10. How much of a Wizard Rock fan would you consider yourself to be?
I'm such a fangirl, it's ridiculous. I fall in love with songs like they're talking about me, not Harry and Ginny or whatever else. I also have a tendency to have a soft spot for wizard rockers, so I get crushes often :D

17.

1. When and how did you become interested in Wizard Rock?
hm... i'm not sure. it's been a while... probably about... a year or so, i guess. my friend Leslie told me about it a while ago, and i was like, that is SOFREAKINGAWESOME and now i'm as obsessed as i am. :]

2. What about Wizard Rock appeals to you?
everything about it. the fact that it's not just about the music, or if the music is good... it's bigger than that. it's about support, it's about love, it's about harry potter, it's about life. it's so much deeper than regular music, and it's got an amazing subject... the greatest book series of all time.

3. Have you been to any Wizard Rock concerts? If so, how many?
unfortunately, none yet. unless of course, you count the mini one where i found out that i was in a band, and the other two members surprised me with a song they wrote... which was kind of a private concert in my room. x]

4. Do you interact with other Wizard Rock fans? If so, where do you usually interact with them?
of course. i interact with them everywhere. a lot of my friends are wizard rock fans, actually. so, everywhere. especially myspace and facebook.

5. How do you learn about Wizard Rock bands and artists?
myspace. or through word-of-mouth of my friends, and THEN i find them on myspace. x] the only GOOD use of myspace... *sigh*

6. How frequently do you go to Wizard Rock-related websites? Which websites do you typically go to?
wizrocklopedia.com is my homepage. yeah, that's kind of obsessive, but at least i can stay on top of the news. it was going to be the-leaky-cauldron.com, butttt i like wizrocklopedia better ^_^. and of course, the band websites and myspaces... :]

7. Do you think that there is a Wizard Rock community? If so, how would you describe this community, and would you consider yourself to be a member of it?
of course. there's a huge, tightknit community of us, and of course i include myself. everyone seems to like everyone else, and that's the best part of it. it's just a group of people, a HUGE group of people, that loves harry potter, his message, jo rowling, and rock music. or, music in general. it's brilliant, to sum it up in a word.

8. Do you participate in or enjoy any other aspects of Harry Potter fan culture like fanfiction, fanart, or roleplaying?
well... i would love to say fanart, but i never have time to draw the things in my mind... but i do have a lot of pictures that i'm going to draw over summer ^__^ haha... other than that, i used to read fanfiction, but again, the time constraints have killed that, and the fact that a lot of it is slash nowadays... >.< grody.

9. Are you a Wizard Rock musician or have you ever considered becoming one? If so, why?
yup! i'm in the band Rowena's Wrockers... we're rather amateur, but that's ok. :] and i have wanted to have a band since the first time i listened to harry and the potters, my first wizard rocking experience... i know this will sound cliche and everything, but it's a magical kind of experience, writing songs with good messages and getting the kind of response we get... it's awesome.

10. How much of a Wizard Rock fan would you consider yourself to be?
a huge, hardcore fan. ^_^ hahahaha no, i kid. no, i try to be a huge fan, but school kind of kills that, like it does with everything else... but i am kind of obsessed with it, and with the series itself... HUGE fan, then, i suppose. x] "wizard rock fans are the sweetest bunch of fans, and most of them are girls and you're certainly a man" [hahaha, The Whomping Willows.]

^___^ yeah, long responses. I'm sorry. I'm longwinded. but anywho.
brilliant survey. x]

1. When and how did you become interested in Wizard Rock?
A friend in my first year of university gave me a Harry and the Potters CD about 2.5 years ago, then i got more into it after that, from going to shows and exploring around myspace

2. What about Wizard Rock appeals to you?
Its all about having fun around a common interest. I'm not really a fan of mainstream music, I find it overuses sex and violence, along with swearing and often derogatory nature towards all sorts of people. Wizard Rock is fun and often has a positive message and everyone seems willing to help each other out and support charities etc.

3. Have you been to any Wizard Rock concerts? If so, how many?
Yes, I've been to 3 technically, but one of them was the concert at Prophecy (with 4 bands) and I saw some of the open mic stuff in the common room at prophecy too.

4. Do you interact with other Wizard Rock fans? If so, where do you usually interact with them?
I'm lucky in that quite a few of my friends in my city are fans of wrock. So we hang out, and wizard rock gets involved with our normal hanging out time. I have met other friends at concerts and we interact online (as we live further away) via facebook, aim and msn, as well as myspace and youtube.

5. How do you learn about Wizard Rock bands and artists?
I rely a lot on my friends to recommend new bands, I also keep an eye out on myspace and see what others are reccommending. I find that The Wizrocklopedia is a great place to find new bands as well.

6. How frequently do you go to Wizard Rock-related websites? Which websites do you typically go to?
While procrastinating from doing schoolwork...haha, I probably check the Wizrocklopedia at least once a day. I sign into myspace at least once every 2 days and peruse. I also subscribe to a few youtube accounts belonging to wizard rockers so i'll watch their videos when they upload a new one.

7. Do you think that there is a Wizard Rock community? If so, how would you describe this community, and would you consider yourself to be a member of it?
I would definitely say there is a community, and that I feel a part of it. Its a very supportive community, with everyone very willing to promote new bands, songs, charities and political causes. There is also lots of support for people going through hard times. Its a community full of a lot of love.

8. Do you participate in or enjoy any other aspects of Harry Potter fan culture like fanfiction, fanart, or roleplaying?
I'm no artist, but I enjoy looking at fanart. I'm not a roleplayer. But I love fanfic and have tried my hand at writing a few myself - they've remained solely on my computer so far though.

9. Are you a Wizard Rock musician or have you ever considered becoming one? If so, why?
At the end of the summer of 2007 two of my friends and i were not ready to give up on the summer of potter - so we formed our own band, called 'Episkey' (episkeywrock on myspace). It's since grown to include about 5 of our other friends. We're not extremely talented but we consider ourselves wizard rockers and have a lot of fun coming up with new songs and playing them together.

10. How much of a Wizard Rock fan would you consider yourself to be?
I think I'm a pretty big wrock fan. I have a lot of the CDs and listen to them on the way to school - on the bus. Its some of my favourite music, it connects me to a lot of my friends and when i listen to it it brings to mind a lot of good memories. I'd rather listen to wrock and be smiling on the way to class than listen to something else!...and I'm probably obsessed. :D

Hope this helps!
